DescriptionRussian icon. Part of a series of icons probably consisting of 12 panels. The silver frame is broader on the bottom with varying shades of blue and green enamel decoration. Two elaborate towers flank the background, one in pink and the other in blue. These are joined by a bright pink ribbon of the same shade as the crenellated pink wall below. In the foreground St. Anne sits upright on her bed watching the first bath of infant Mary. On a table beside her are two vessels with three attendants standing behind it. Joachim, her husband, stands to the right. Joachim, Anne and Mary are differentiated from the other figures by their halos.
