DescriptionRussian icon. There are six separate scenes in the panel read from UL to UR, diagonally down to LL, diagonally up to UR and then finally down to LR. In the top left, is a small crucifixion scene with Christ on the cross flanked by Mary and St. John. In the top middle is a scene of the resurrection - Christ shown in glory surrounded by a mandorla of golden rays. Surrounding this, Roman soldiers and angels are shown travelling down toward a dark building. At the bottom, two angels reach over the broken gates of Hell while pushing a figure away. To the right is the beginning of the Anastasis - Christ, in a red mandorla, tramples the broken gates of Hell while pulling Adam and Eve up from the grave. A crowd of figures surrounding Christ walk toward an open gate to Heaven in the UR corner, Solomon and David are in their number. Below this is a scene of Christ standing in water making a sign of blessing. A figure approaches him in the water and a boat containing men trails out of the pictorial plane.Collections
