DescriptionRussian icon. Twelve small scenes surrounding a central larger scene. 1st row: Birth of the Virgin Mary, Presentation of Mary in the temple, the Annunciation, the Nativity. 2nd row: The presentation of Jesus in the temple, the Baptism of Christ. 3rd row: Christ's entry into Jerusalem and the Transfiguration. 4th row: The Ascension, the Old Testament Trinity, The Adoration of the Cross and Dormition of the Mother of God. Each of these are identified by inscriptions in the frame. The central image combines scenes of the resurrection and the anastasis. At the top Christ is on a platform representing an empty tomb with a procession of angels descending to the mouth of hell on his left. An older man watches from the UL and two figures from the UR. At the bottom Christ stands on the broken gates of hell extending his hand to Adam who emerges from the grave. The dead emerge from the jaws of hell in the LL. LR corner shows a kneeling angel against a black background. The outer border is a dark ochre with gold inscriptions.Collections
